Elderly man caught in electric blanket bed fire

AN ELDERLY man was taken to hospital on Monday night after a bedroom fire started by a faulty electrical blanket.

The blaze, at a house in Pyrford Road, West Byfleet, was reported at about 10.30pm and firefighters from Painshill and Woking attended the scene.

An 88-year-old man was led to safety and taken by ambulance to St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey, where he was treated for smoke inhalation.

A spokesman for Painshill fire station said: “There was a fire in the bedroom which we think was caused by a faulty electric blanket.

“The smoke damage was localised in the bedroom, where an elderly gentleman was inside.

"He got out safely and was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.”

A spokesman from Woking fire station added: “This serves as a warning to everyone with an electric blanket, which will be used much more as the weather gets colder.

“When you get one make sure it has been thoroughly checked, and Surrey Trading Standards can do this for you.

“Accidents tend to happen when people fold them over, putting pressure on the wires.

“If the blanket is any more than five-years-old it is sometimes best to get rid of it and get a new one.”

Elderly pedestrian dies after Slyfield collision

AN ELDERLY pedestrian has died after being hit by a car as she crossed a road in Guildford early on Tuesday evening.

Traffic was unable to get into and out of Slyfield Industrial Estate following the incident in Moorfield Road at about 5pm.

The 67-year-old?victim had just posted some letters and was?crossing the road back to her car?when she was struck by a red Peugeot 405.

Police said the woman had parked her Vauxhall Omega?in a lay-by.

The Peugeot was travelling west towards?a set of?traffic lights when?the accident?happened.

The victim, who was from the Guildford area,?was taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting where she later died of her injuries.

One eyewitness described the scene, saying: "At the peak there were two ambulances, and at least?eight police cars, two paramedic cars and 20-plus police officers.

"The police road traffic investigation team was out taking measurements and photographing and mapping the scene.

"I also heard a police officer requesting that someone go through the victim’s handbag to find next of kin details.

"Damage on the Peugeot was clearly visible, including a smashed headlight and a dented bonnet."

Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the collision investigation unit on 01483 639922.

Elderly woman hit by Royal Mail van in Farnham

AN ELDERLY woman was taken to hospital with a serious leg injury after being hit by a Royal Mail van in Farnham on Friday morning.

The incident happened at the rear of the Lower Bourne Post Office, in Dene Way,?at around 10.08am.

The woman, 80-year-old Barbara Spooner, had just come out of the building when she was hit by the red van in a parking area.

She was taken to Frimley Park Hospital where her condition was described as non-life threatening.

Rosemary Holder, 59, who works in the adjoining Costcutter convenience store, was at the scene at the time of the accident and describing waiting with Mrs Spooner for?an ambulance to arrive.

She said: "I had heard that a lady had fallen out back and went outside to see if I could help.

"When I got there I saw Barbara on the ground with another lady supporting her.

"She was in pain but she was talking, she held my hand while we waited for the ambulance."

Surrey Police is appealing for any witnesses to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 01483 639922.
