Jail for illegal immigrants arrested at cannabis farm

A PAIR of illegal immigrants who were arrested during a raid on a Whyteleafe cannabis farm have each been jailed for two years.

Vietnam-born Bao and Tam Nguyen, who are not related, were held at an address in Godstone Road on September 27 after the homeowner discovered the drugs factory and called the police.

Officers?found 478 cannabis plants worth “tens of thousands of pounds”, which were?being grown in a “highly sophisticated” operation.

At Guildford Crown Court on Wednesday (December 22), both men pleaded guilty to producing?a controlled drug, namely class B cannabis.

Bao, 51, and Tam, 24, have been in HMP High Down in Banstead since the day after their arrest but, before that,?had been?living in the property since June.

Both the men were in the country illegally. Bao overstayed a one-month tourist visa having arrived in May, but claimed he was forced to work in the drugs farm after running up gambling debts.

Tam arrived in the UK illegally and?said he was tricked into working at the house after being offered employment which he believed to be in a restaurant.

Keith Goodhand, defending, urged Judge Neil Stewart to be lenient with the men as they had already suffered shame and embarassment.

He added: “Both the men accept that they shouldn’t have been there at the time and both have been in custody since.

“Bao Nguyen has five children between the ages of 30 and 17 and he has to deal with the fact that he has not only let himself down but he has let his family down.

“They both feel a sense of disgrace now and even more so when they are inevitably deported to their home country.”

Sentencing, Judge Stewart said: “You were both present in the house when it was searched by the police and both of you had been concerned in looking after the 478 plants.

“You are both adults and neither of you should have been in the country at all.

"I expect and hope you will be automatically deported at the end of your sentence.”

A?13-YEAR-OLD girl missing from her Cornwall home has been found in Surrey after apparently being lured there by a woman she met online.

Police arrested a 35-year-old woman in Horley on Tuesday (November 23) on suspicion of child sex and grooming offences, after the youngster's mother found internet messages relating to travel arrangements to and from Gatwick Airport.

Surrey Police said: "Officers attended an address in Horley at around 5am on Tuesday following a request from Devon and Cornwall Police, who were conducting a missing persons inquiry.

"Officers arrested a 35-year-old woman on suspicion of sexual assault on a minor and grooming a minor for sexual purposes. She has been released on conditional bail until January.

"We are liasing with Devon and Cornwall and the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Inquiries are continuing."

It is understood two tickets had been bought for a flight from Gatwick to Belfast.

Northern Ireland police added: "Following a request from Surrey Police, officers searched a house in Cookstown, Co Tyrone. A number of items were removed for further examination."

A council spokeswoman in Cornwall confirmed?the authorities?were helping the police inquiry.

The girl's horrified mother,?40, said: "We only found out where she had gone by hacking into her internet messages.

"It's every parent's nightmare.?A million things could have happened.

"She was even wearing her school uniform. She is a 13-year-old kid who looks her age.

"Forty years ago you had to hide behind a bush to grab a child. Now you can just sit in a chatroom. It shows nowhere is safe. It's absolutely nuts.

"Whatever happened, I'm glad my daughter is still alive. It could have been so much worse.

"But we have been left with a life sentence. We will never get over this and neither will my daughter."

The teenager is now back with her family in Cornwall.

PC in Reigate arrested after "sex attack."

SURREY police officer arrested in connection with an alleged Friday sex attack (22 October).

The PC, which lies at the police station in Reigate, was arrested by agents of Sussex Police over the weekend to report sexual assault in the field of Burgess Hill in West Sussex, has confirmed the Surrey police.

Agent, which has not been appointed, is currently under investigation and was suspended from his duties.

Surrey Police issued a brief statement Monday afternoon confirming the arrest.
