A MAN has been charged in connection with the theft of commemorative plaques from Lingfield's war memorial.

Ernie Wayne Jones, 24, of Selbys in the town, was charged with handling stolen goods by police?last Thursday.

It?relates to the theft of a number of brass plaques taken from?the memorial in the High Street overnight between?October 14 and?15.

He is now due to appear at Redhill Magistrates’ Court on?December 3.

Teens charged over vandalism and rail crime

TWO teenagers have been charged with a number of offences in relation to overnight vandalism in Godalming in September, as well as a spate of thefts and criminal damage at railway stations in west Surrey.

Samuel Gilbert, 18, of Avondale, Ash Vale, and a 15-year-old from the Godalming area who cannot be named for legal reasons, are jointly accused of?three counts of criminal damage.

The charges include causing more than £1,641?of damage to a mobile library owned by Surrey County Council, which was parked behind Godalming Library in Bridge Road when it was vandalised on September 16.

Mr Gilbert has also been charged with a further?10 offences by British Transport Police (BTP) and the 15-year-old with five others.

The pair have been released on bail to appear at Guildford Magistrates' Court on December 8.

The BTP charges against Samuel Gilbert are:

  • Godalming, August 12,?theft of a cycle
  • Ash Vale, August 16,?interfere with rail equipment
  • Godalming, September 2,?criminal damage?- graffiti
  • Godalming, September 21,?criminal damage to motor vehicle
  • Farncombe, October 2,?theft of a cycle
  • Farncombe, October 4,?trespass
  • Farncombe, October?4,?fare evasion
  • Farncombe, October 7,?theft of milk
  • Farncombe, October 12,?criminal damage to motor vehicle
  • Farncombe, October 12,?stone throwing

The BTP charges against the 15-year-old are:

  • Godalming, September 2,?criminal damage?- graffiti
  • Witley, September 20,?criminal damage to motor vehicle
  • Godalming, September 23,?theft of a cycle
  • Godalming, September 29,?theft of a cycle
  • Farncombe, October 15,?theft of a fire extinguisher
