Stolen Mercedes crashed into estate agents

A STOLEN Mercedes being driven?along Knaphill High Street?was in collision with another car on Friday morning before?ploughing into an estate agents' office.

The crash involved the dark metallic grey Mercedes estate and a grey Mazda, which was at the junction with The Broadway waiting to turn onto the High Street at around 5.39am.

The Mercedes then crashed into the Mann Countrywide building, before the driver ran off from the scene.

The car had been?stolen in an overnight burglary in Goldsworth Park some time between 10pm on Wednesday (November 17) and 6am on Thursday.

The motorist in the Mazda?was not hurt in the collision.

The estate agents building?was being made safe on Friday morning after police officers?and?firefighters?attended the scene.

Branch manager Sarah Greenland was driving to the office to open up on Friday morning when she was texted with news of the crash.

She said: "One of the desks in the office is right by the door, so if this had happened three hours later it could have been horrific.

"I've worked here for about three years, and that junction is always causing problems.

"We frequently see crashes or accidents, but never anything like this. It's almost like we've been waiting for it to happen."

Staff are currently working from the company's Woking branch in Commercial Way.

"We might be able to open some time next week but we have to wait to be told by police," Ms Greenland added.

Surrey Police?are appealing for witnesses to the collision, and anyone with information is asked to call 0845 125 2222, quoting reference WK/10/8349.

Two female passengers in the stolen car, a 20-year-old and a 16-year-old, are currently in custody.

Poppy tin stolen day before nation fell silent

A "COWARDLY" thief stole a village deli's Poppy Appeal tin the day before Armistice Day.

The?theft took place at the Honeychurch Deli in St Judes Road, Englefield Green, some time on Wednesday, November 10.

Delicatessen manager Olana Tansley-Hancock said she thought there was about ￡50 in the pot, but she did not see who had taken it.

She said: "We only noticed when we went to put some money in just before 11am today [last Thursday]?- it pretty much ruined the two minutes' silence, it made me feel really bad.

"There was a moment yesterday when I was out the back and I heard the bell go, but when I came out to the shop, there was someone just leaving.

"Clearly they are very desperate - especially to do it the day before Remembrance Day."

Runnymede Neighbourhood Inspector Roger Nield condemned the theft, saying: "This was a cowardly and cynical offence and Surrey Police is determined to track down those responsible.

"It is particularly sad and disappointing that this theft has taken place so close to Remembrance Sunday. Anyone who was in the area around the time of the offence and may have seen or heard anything unusual should contact us."

Speaking of the theft, Barry Watson, treasurer of the Englefield Green branch of the Royal British Legion, said: "It's terrible how people can resort to be that low and steal from a worthy charity.

"There is no shame in this world anymore. No shame, no pride and no dignity."

Earlier this month, X Factor?judge Simon Cowell visited the Honeychurch Deli to buy a sandwich and paid with a ￡50 note, putting the change into?another charity collection for the Sam Beare Hospice. Miss Tansley-Hancock said luckily that pot had been emptied earlier last week.
