THE man who attacked undercover TV reporter Donal MacIntyre in a bar in East Molesey has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

James Wild, 47, of Bridge Wharf, Chertsey, appeared at Guildford Crown Court for sentencing on Friday having been previously convicted of assault?occasioning actual bodily harm on Mr MacIntyre and his wife Ameera.

He?was given a two-year sentence for the assault on Mr MacIntyre and six months more?for assaulting his wife.

The?incident came as a result of a 1999 documentary made by the reporter on the Chelsea Headhunters firm, which led to a notorious football hooligan being jailed.

Sentencing Wild, Recorder Laurence West QC?said: "What happened in my view, having heard all of the evidence, is that following the original incident you were one of the figures involved in the further attack on Mr MacIntyre.

"You were involved in the?attack in the foyer of the club where Mrs MacIntyre put it that people who attacked her husband were on him like a pack of wolves.

"Wolves is giving them too much credit because wolves have courage."

Wild's?trial, which lasted?a week, heard the MacIntyres were at the Cloud 9 bar on June 17 last year when they were attacked.

Mrs MacIntyre?had been?due to go for a brain scan the next day.

An?altercation was sparked after they were approached by a man dressed head to toe in black, who began shouting at Mr MacIntyre.

The couple ran to the toilets but were surrounded by a gang as they attempted to leave. Mr MacIntyre was knocked over and hit by James Wild as he tried to get up.

He suffered?a black eye as a result of the attack, while his wife was left with bruises.

Gregory Fishwick, defending, said he was forced to go sift through a "binload" of references because of his client's good reputation.

"James Wild is a loving, giving, caring and hardworking man who does what he can for others, particularly with regards to his charity work," he said.

"His wife, his child, his fledging business would be affected if he is incarcerated."

The 25 days Wild spent on remand will count towards his sentence.

Speaking after the sentencing, Mr MacIntyre said?he was?very pleased that?"justice had been done."

But he added: "It is with great regret that only one of the 10 people who were involved in the assault were in the dock.

"I would invite Surrey Police and the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) to review this case and to review the support they give to witnesses.

"I am still grateful for the support?of my wife who had to go through what she and my family members shouldn't ever have to go through."

Donal MacIntyre attacked by 'pack of wolves'

THE man accused of attacking TV reporter Donal MacIntyre has claimed he was an innocent bystander acting in self defence.

James Wild, 47, along with his daughter Caley, 23, is accused of being part of a?revenge attack on Mr MacIntyre and his wife Ameera.

Jurors have been told it happened because of an undercover TV documentary made in 1999 by the reporter, which led to a six-year jail term for a football hooligan called Jason Marriner, a member of the Chelsea Headhunters 'firm'.

But giving evidence on Thursday (October 28), Mr Wild said he only got involved in the incident when he tried to defend himself after Mr MacIntyre picked on him.

He said: "I had no idea about this Chelsea Headhunter business. I'm a Manchester United fan - I even have a tattoo of their emblem on my right shoulder.

"I acted 100% in self defence. He lunged at me after he had been shouting 'come on then, come on'.

"I did not attack him in any way other than in self defence.

"The expression of anger on his face and the way he came at me forced me to defend myself."

Mr Wild referred barristers repeatedly to CCTV footage which showed him walking up and down?at Cloud 9 Bar in East Molesey?- where the attack allegedly happened - pointing out how he had his hands in his pockets the whole time.

"Singled out"

He said: "You can see I'm not being aggressive - my hands are in my pockets.

"I got forced towards the door in a melee because another group rushed from behind trying to get at Mr MacIntyre.

"Then, when he was hit to the ground, I had no option but to go part of the way with him because of the crowd.

"While he was on the floor I was closest to him but I did not try to hit him at any point.

"The only thing I can think is that because I was so close, he singled out my face from everyone else."

The court was told by?defence barrister Gregory Fishwick that Mr Wild, of Isis House, Bridge Wharf, Chertsey, had an early history of offending, including violence, but had been clear of convictions for 26 years.

The jury heard he spent three months in a young offenders' institute after he was involved in a pub brawl in 1979.

Two years later at Richmond Magistrates' Court,?Mr Wild?was fined for vehicle-related offences including driving without a licence or insurance, and for taking a conveyance without permisson.

In 1982 he was arrested and fined ￡500 for theft of lead from the roof of a building which he claimed?was abandoned at the time.

His last offence was in 1984 for driving while uninsured.

But since then,?Mr Wild had "got himself back on track", said Mr Fishwick.

"Kicked viciously"

During?his evidence, the defendant said he currently lived for most of the year in Estepona in Spain and had a business selling specialist sunbeds on tourist beaches.

Earlier on Thursday, Ameera MacIntyre also gave evidence.

She?told the court: "I had been crying in the toilet after these men approached me and my husband at the table

"They were shouting things about Jason Marriner and saying Donal was a grass," she said.

"Donal had followed me to the ladies and he was trying to console me.

"Then when we left the ladies', there was a group of them and they surrounded Donal.

"They descended on him like a pack of wolves.

"He was pushed to the floor in the doorway and was being punched and kicked viciously.

"It was a sea of people and while they were kicking him they kept saying 'get him - this is for Jason'.

Mr Wild denies assault on Donal MacIntyre causing actual bodily harm and assault causing actual bodily harm to Ameera McIntyre and?another charge of harming a witness.

Caley Wild, of Peregrine Road, Sunbury,?denies one count of assault by beating.

The trial continues.

But Mr. Wild testify Thursday (October 28), said that he got involved in the incident while trying to defend themselves after Mr. MacIntyre picked on him.

He said: "I had no idea about this company Chelsea.Je Headhunter am a fan of Manchester United - I have a tattoo of the emblem on my right shoulder."

"I acted with 100% legitimate slender défense.Il me once that he was shouting" and then, on ".".

"I do not attack him in any way than others in self-defence."

"Expression of anger over her face and how he came to me forced defend me myself."

Mr. Wild referred lawyers on several occasions to him walking towards the top and bottom to Cloud 9 bar in Molesey - where the attack was reportedly passed - CCTV footage pointing how he had his hands in his pockets all the time shown.

"Singularisé".

He said: "you can see I am being aggressive - my hands in my pockets."

"I myself am forced to the door in a melee because another rushed behind trying to Mr MacIntyre.".

"Then when he was hit on the ground, I had no choice but to go party mode with him because of the crowd."

"While he was on the floor I was closest to him but I did not try to hit at any time.

"The only thing I can think is that because I was so close, it singled out my face in the world."

The Tribunal has been informed by counsel for defence Gregory Fishwick as Mr. Wild, Isis House, Chertsey bridge Wharf, had a history of delinquency, including violence, but had clearly been convictions for 26 years.

The Board heard that he spent three months in Institute a young offenders after that he was involved in a brawl pub in 1979.
