Funerals held for friends drowned in Thames

THE funeral has been held for a teenager who drowned alongside his best friend as they tried to save a pet dog that had got into difficulties in the River Thames.

Friends?and family of Ian Coy gathered at St Mary's Church, Stanwell, last Tuesday (November 2) to say their final farewells.

The 19-year-old trainee mechanic, who attended Brooklands College?in?Weybridge, died trying to rescue Kadir Shillingford after he had jumped into Penton Hook Weir to save his pet Staffordshire bull terrier, Bailey, on?October 20.

The funeral was followed by a cremation?in Hanworth. Floral messages to?Mr Coy?included one paying tribute to "a hero and a legend who will be remembered forever". Another read: "RIP Ian. May the angels watch over you."

Meanwhile, the family of Kadir Shillingford have spoken of their sadness at losing a "kind and funny man" in such tragic circumstances.

His?sister, Sara Young, said: "He loved his friends, he was lovely, he would do anything for his family and friends. We are all just devastated."

Mr Shillingford grew up with his parents in Feltham, before moving to Stanwell two years ago then to Penton Hook less than two weeks ago, where he had planned to "start a new life".

The river path was near his new home in Wheatsheaf Lane and he had started walking his dog regularly with Mr Coy.

Ms?Young said: "He was just starting a new chapter of his life. He had moved to this new area and he was really happy."

A former pupil of Southville Junior School and Ashford High School, Mr Shillingford worked as a manual labourer and was due to start a new job as a welder.

He had a passion for rugby and motocross, travelling all over the country with friends to watch the sports.

He also loved to take his nieces and nephews out for the day, treating them to swimming trips and museum visits.

Mr Shillingford's funeral was due to be held on Monday (November 8) at St Lawrence's Church in?Feltham followed by a burial at Bedfont cemetery.

Family tributes to best friends are drowned in the Thames

PARENTS were paid tribute to the two best friends who drowned after jumping on the River Thames freeze to save a dog.

Kadir Shillingford bodies 25 and 19 years Ian Coy, who were both Staines, from water, Wednesday and Thursday.

The couple was walking by the River with their dogs to Penton Hook Lock, near Laleham, when an animal in trouble in the water.

As the dog fought against the current, M. Shillingford jumped in to try to save it.

But he was defeated by ice water, which prompted the company M. - a former student at the school in Ashford - go in.

Passers-by could only view with horror that the pair has disappeared under water and failed to resurface.

The dog, an American Staffordshire terrier named Bailey, scrambled to shore safely

Mr. Shillingford, body bright rugby player was fired from the Thames River on Wednesday night, a few hours after the tragedy happened.

And Thursday, police divers recovered body of Mr. co. as its devastated family viewed.

A candlelit Vigil was held later by the riverside and flowers have been brought to the scene.

Mr. co., father Andrew, identifying the bodies of his sons.

"It was the thing harder that I never had to do", said the 46-year old.

Mother Collette co., 44 years, added: "Ian lived life pleinement.Il did not think himself threatening, it is just a gut reaction to jump to save her best friend."

"It was the Mummy, a boy and I will always love him."

Friend Francis Jade, 26, said: "they were full of life and so their chiens.Ils came here for some and tranquillité.Je cannot believe it."
