Army truck collides with minibus, six students hospitalised

Yesterday, some students of St Mary’s Primary School, Soesdyke, were rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre following a collision between a Guyana Defence Force truck and a route 42 minibus (BKK 3369). The accident occurred at Coverden, East Bank Demerara.
The driver of the minibus has been identified as Balram Persaud, who said that while driving along the roadway at Coverden he made a stop to drop off a child and then, using proper indication to show his vehicle’s direction, he then proceeded back on the highway.

He felt a sudden impact that resulted in the students being injured. He stated that he “then noticed the G.D.F truck in the back of his vehicle”.
Another eyewitness stated that the fault was due to Persaud braking suddenly on the highway, resulting the army truck collided with Persaud’s minibus. According to the conductress, Dalarie Garbaran, “the bus had around 15 students”. Six were taken to the hospital by army officials and public-spirited citizens.
One onlooker told Kaieteur News that Persaud had been driving the vehicle for years and people may think that he is a cautious driver.
The GDF in a press release, stated that “11 children were taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre for treatment. Three of them were referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further treatment while the others were sent away”.
The army added, “The force expresses regret for the incident, and is prepared through its Welfare Department, to render the necessary assistance to the affected.” Kaieteur News understands that the Guyana Defence Force is also investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Police Officers were on the scene of the accident and both Persaud and Garbaran are assisting with investigations.

Truck driver slapped with 12 counts of causing death

Thirty-eight year-old Chetram Moonsammy, of Johanna, Black Bush Polder, Berbice, appeared at the Berbice Magistrate court yesterday before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo to answer to 13 charges.
Moonsammy was charged with 12 counts of causing death by dangerous driving and one count of failing to render assistance.
It alleged that on Friday, October 29, last, he drove motor lorry GLL 8863 in a manner dangerous to the public and claimed the lives of 12 persons while injuring five others.

Police prosecutor Roberto Figueira told the Magistrate that the defendant should be remanded to prison citing the seriousness of the offence. He said that the defendant allegedly caused the death of 12 persons and if granted bail would flee the jurisdiction. He said that the offence was committed on the Number 19 Corentyne Public Road, Berbice, and that the said lorry driver did not offer any assistance. He fled the scene but was arrested at the Whim Police Station.
Attorney at law Mursaline Bacchus appeared on behalf of the defendant, and made an application for bail. He informed the Magistrate that the offence is a bailable one and that his client did not act recklessly and if he did, he would have been charged with manslaughter.
He stated that his client on the day of the incident did not flee the scene, but instead reported at the Whim Police Station and was brought back to the scene.
Bacchus told the court that the fact 12 persons died does not mean that his client is guilty and refusal of bail should not be used as a punishment.
Moonsammy’s attorney also made reference to a report in the media which stated that the driver of the bus that was involved in the accident ‘was at fault’ and that the police did not refute such claims.
The Magistrate however objected to him using print media information.

Bacchus went on to explain that the prosecutor did not submit any growing evidence and he did not see why his client should be denied bail.
The lawyer told the magistrate that his client lives with his wife and is tasked with providing a livelihood for three minors. He owns 150 acres of rice fields which is in its period of harvesting, and if incarcerated, he will lose all his crops. In addition to his lengthy bail application, the passport due date of the accused was also submitted as proof for bail to be granted.
It appeared that Bacchus’s submission fell on deaf ears as Moonsammy was remanded and will return to court on January 3rd.
Bacchus then informed Magistrate Nagamootoo that he would be moving to the High Court for bail.
On Friday, last, Oudit Narine Baboolall, who was the driver of the of the minibus; Orlando De Mattos, Talita Mendonca and her two-month-old son Josiah Khan; Janet Baker, 46-year-old Salima Dilmohammed, Salmaa Razaac, Cindy Jaggernauth, 35, Patricia Asgarally, 38 year-old Chetram Ramphal, Nazradin Mohinudin and Marquest Ault were killed in an accident on the No.19 Corentyne Public Road.
The route 63 minibus was heading east along the thoroughfare when it collided with a truck driven by Moonsammy.
It was reported that it was raining at the time of the accident.
The five survivors are Tamika Fraser, of Kildonan; Sham Jaggernauth, of Nigg; Nicola Ross and Anwhatie Singh.

Man dies after being hit by truck in Walton

AN elderly man was overthrown and killed by a truck at Walton Thursday morning.

The accident took place in the street of the Church at 9.20 suis.La road with Hepworth Way autour, was closed for several hours, while agents carried out their investigations, with drivers said to avoid the area until that roads have been reopened shortly before 1300.

The pedestrian was delivered at the scene.

A worker at postoffice on the street of the said Church one of its customers has witnessed following the collision of heavy goods vehicles.

"She was so traumatized, it was shocking and I have never seen so many police here in my life", she says.

"She just to put a blanket on the body."

"It says that the man moved as if he saw the truck and then just hit truck."

"I cannot imagine what is arrivé.Juste think now just gives me goose, buttons such as shock."

Chris Bavin, who leads the grocer nu in Bridge Street, said: "Yes, it cause some minor our deliveries disadvantages because they had to go for alternative pathways."

"But it is next to nothing at the who arrived to this Mr."

"Our thoughts go out to him and his famille.Des things like this just put things in perspective.

Councillor David Archer, Member of the cabinet of Elmbridge roads and transport, which is passed to Walton Thursday, and he said: "it is a bad question jonction.Sans, it serves not pedestrians actually well and should be examined again by the Council of County of Surrey.".

"This is a tragédie.Mes condolences go out to the family."

Surrey Police said: "officers are particularly keen to hear any person who saw the pedestrian or vehicle prior to the collision, or anyone who has witnessed the incident, but left the scene before arrived it agents."
