Elderly man caught in electric blanket bed fire

AN ELDERLY man was taken to hospital on Monday night after a bedroom fire started by a faulty electrical blanket.

The blaze, at a house in Pyrford Road, West Byfleet, was reported at about 10.30pm and firefighters from Painshill and Woking attended the scene.

An 88-year-old man was led to safety and taken by ambulance to St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey, where he was treated for smoke inhalation.

A spokesman for Painshill fire station said: “There was a fire in the bedroom which we think was caused by a faulty electric blanket.

“The smoke damage was localised in the bedroom, where an elderly gentleman was inside.

"He got out safely and was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.”

A spokesman from Woking fire station added: “This serves as a warning to everyone with an electric blanket, which will be used much more as the weather gets colder.

“When you get one make sure it has been thoroughly checked, and Surrey Trading Standards can do this for you.

“Accidents tend to happen when people fold them over, putting pressure on the wires.

“If the blanket is any more than five-years-old it is sometimes best to get rid of it and get a new one.”

Man, 35, caught fondling niece, 11

While details are still sketchy, the Head of the Child Care and Protection Agency, Ann Greene, yesterday confirmed that the entity did have custody of an 11-year-old girl, and that there is an ongoing investigation following reports of sexual molestation.
This newspaper understands that about three weeks ago, the girl’s aunt who lives in the lower flat of their Meten-Meer-Zorg residence, walked in and found her 35-year-old brother and her naked niece.
She told this newspaper that she saw her brother sitting on the bed and the girl standing in front of him and he was sucking on her breasts and fondling her. The little girl ran when her aunt entered and the brother has since been threatening the aunt, saying that she and her husband must move out of the bottom flat.
The 11 year-old girl’s mother, meanwhile, is reportedly in denial.
The girl allegedly told a neighbour that the acts have been happening for close to two years now.
She said that while he has not had sex with her he would put her to watch “blues’ (pornography) and he would have her perform oral sex.
While a report was made to the police and the man was detained, he has since been released.

Brazen bandit caught hiding in septic tank

A bandit who brazenly held up a Banks DIH beverage truck at? First Phase, Wisroc, Linden, yesterday midday, and escaped with $50,000 in cash, is presently in police custody, after he was caught hiding in a septic tank in the community.
Some irate residents who witnessed the whole thing said that they would have given the man a sound thrashing, if the police had not intervened.
According to one resident, the bandit who was armed with a handgun stopped the truck by standing on the road and brandishing the weapon menacingly at the driver.
After the driver Kevon Newland stopped the truck, the bandit proceeded to rob him of the sales money, which was reportedly about $50,000. He then escaped and hid in a septic tank, where he was subsequently caught by the police.
One resident opined that the man seemed to be unfamiliar with the area, hence his decision to hide in the septic tank.
The robber is expected to appear at the Christianburg Magistrate’s court tomorrow.
