Dognapping fear as Jack Russell returned to owner

A MISSING?terrier has been returned to its owner following?the latest in a string of suspected dognappings around Ash,?which have included one woman witnessing her?pet being enticed into a car.

Jasmine, a Jack Russell terrier cross, went missing on the morning of November 18 when she was taken for a walk with another dog by owner June?Beardall’s friend, Chrissy Porter, on the Ash Ranges.

Both had run off, before returning to Ms Porter and then running away again.

However, Jasmine did not come back the second time, and there had been no sightings of her until a woman called?Mrs Beardall?on Wednesday night (November 24) to say she had been sold the animal for £50.

Mrs Beardall, 77, said: “A lady rang up and said that two youths had sold her this dog.

“Some chap brought her back. He said that they had had her since Sunday (November 21),?but I have a feeling they have had her all that time [since she went missing].

“I got onto the police as I had informed them about it. It seemed a bit funny.

“I have a feeling that if she had been a bit younger and hadn’t been spayed, they might have kept her for breeding.”

The Ash resident said she was given Jasmine last year following the death of her husband in June.

Her daughter died of bronchial pneumonia a few months later in November.

"Lovely dog"

“My cat died last December too, so it was a tough time,” said Mrs Beardall.

“Jasmine’s owner couldn’t look after her anymore, so my daughter-in-law asked if I could have her, as she knew I was a bit down.

“She’s such a lovely dog. She means a lot and has been great company for me.”

Mrs Beardall added: “Being a Jack Russell, she likes to chase squirrels but she always comes back.

"We use a clicker? round her neck and if she wanders too far we click and she comes back.

“It seems funny that she just disappeared off the face of the earth.

“I have got a feeling that she was taken, because she is friendly and would go up to people and was also friendly with other dogs."

According to Mrs Beardall, there have been several suspicious incidents involving dogs?in Ash.

Car and van

She said: “I spoke to several people and one woman said that two or three dogs have gone missing from over there. It makes you wonder.

“One woman was taking her Labrador for a walk, but somebody saw it being put in a red van.

“Apparently she was sold off in Godalming, but when they took her to the vets they?saw that she was chipped and had a name on her, and she was returned to the owner.”

Ms Porter?said she was told about a woman whose dog was enticed into a car in Ash by three youths.

“The woman was in the park next to the tennis courts with her children not long ago, and the dog walked toward a blue Fiesta, which looked like it had three youths inside,” she said.

“She ran over and said, ‘What do you think you are doing’, and the boys slammed the door and drove off.

“She rang the police and they said they are aware of the blue Fiesta and a red van, and are aware that dogs are being encouraged [to get into the vehicles].”

A pale lurcher was also reported missing on Ash Ranges?on November 16.

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said: “An investigation is ongoing relating to a report of a lost dog.

“Dog owners should be vigilant and keep an eye on their animals at all times, particularly if they are approached by an individual who engages them in conversation as this can potentially be used as a distraction technique.”

Review Samsung Galaxy S: Samsung Continuum Review of Reviews

samsungcontinuum2.jpgSamsung Galaxy S, Samsung Continuum Rated 3.6 by Wireless and Mobile News' Review of Reviews

Reviewers of the Samsung Continuum liked the Super AMOLED touchscreen that is divided into a lower ticker section and full screen, small light size, and media player.? They questioned how useful the lower ticker screen is because it can become overwhelming and turns into a "sucking vacuum" for information junkies.? The ticker, however, may be useful for stock brokers, social media enthusiasts and news lovers.

The Samsung Continuum has two screens -? a 1.8-inch 96 x 480 Super AMOLED screen (Ticker Display) below the primary 3.4-inch (480 x 800) main Super AMOLED touchscreen.? The screens are divided by Android menu, back, search and home buttons.? The ticker can be programmed to show news, weather, emails, stock quotes, and social media updates.? The ticker can also be used for media player controls and multitasking.? The ticker is activated by a grip sensor.? The main screen is smaller than other Android screens and makes portrait screen typing more difficult.

Features of the Samsung Continuum include Android 2.1, running on a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, 384MB of RAM/512 MB Flash, 2GB of internal storage, and an 8GB microSD.? Other specs include, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, DLNA, DivX video playback, 3.5mm headset jack, 3G mobile hotspots, and a 5-megapixel 720p video-capable camera with LED flash.

Like other Samsung Galaxy S phones, the Samsung Continuum comes with Media Hub and Social Hub.? The Social Hub can be setup for unified inboxes of email/social media and calendar (read Samsung Galaxy S tips).? One reviewer called the media player "among the best."? Voice quality ratings ranged from mediocre to good.? The battery life was rated from good to mediocre.? Photo quality was mostly well rated.

Reviewers thought that the ticker would determine who would buy it.? If you need constant contact and more than enough information, the Samsung Continuum may be your Samsung Galaxy S phone.? If you like a bigger screen, Verizon has other options, such as the Samsung Fascinate,?Motorola Droid X and DROID Incredible.

Like the Samsung Fascinate, the Samsung Continuum comes preloaded with Bing as the default search engine.? If you prefer Google, you can use voice search or use Google in the web browser.? Google Maps, a very popular free mapping program, can be installed.

Preinstalled apps include Scrabble word game, Skype mobile, Twidroyd, Tetris, MySpace, V CAST videos, Kindle, Bing search, Swype, Voice Search, ALLShare media sharing, Voice Commands, and Voice Recorder.? Preinstalled apps can not be uninstalled.

Verizon sells the Samsung Continuum for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement and data package.? Customers will receive the rebate in the form of a debit card; upon receipt, customers may use the card as cash anywhere debit cards are accepted.

Along with free shipping, Verizon offers an added bonus for ordering online with the Wireless and Mobile News coupon-link so that you can get an Instant Phone Rebate Only Available with Online Purchases.

Verizon recently reduced the price of the-Samsung Continuum to $99.99 for Black Friday only.? In the meantime, online retailers like Amazon Wireless, offer it at a similar price point.? Note: prices can change, so check back often.

An update to Android 2.2 Froyo is expected by the end of this year.

Summaries of Reviews Reviewed

Bonnie Cha at CNET rated the Samsung Continuum 3.5 out of 5 for it's small ticker window(for fast information), 1GHZ processor 5-megapixel camera with HD video capture, and mobile hotspot mode. She didn't like that by cutting the Super AMOLED screen into two screens a 3.4-inch top screen and 1.8 inch ticker screen, it makes typing more cramped, it runs Android 2.1, Bing is the default search engine and preloaded apps can't be uninstalled. The secondary screen can be good for accessing information on the fly but drains processor power. Slimmer than other Galaxy S phones and fits nicely in hands. The touchscreen is responsive. The grip sensor automatically activates the ticker screen which is handy for getting the date/time (no one wears a watch any more), to control the music player while getting Twitter updates can be too much information.? To work around Bing search, you can use voice search which uses Google or go to Google in your web browser. Google maps can be installed and used. Email set up was easy and works well with an unified inbox and calendar. The media player is attractive and advanced with DivX and DLNA support. Photo quality was great, call quality was good, speaker phone quality was above average and battery life was good.?

Sascha Segan at PCmag rated the Samsung Continuum 3.5 out of 5 for the ticker screen, smallness,? lightness and well-built fee. He didn't like the mediocre voice quality, email/social media redundancy and that the ticker sometimes shows old data. He found that the ticker made him hungry for more data but didn't like the execution of the software "The punchy 3.4-inch, 800-by-480 main Super-AMOLED display looks really sharp and bright, but touch element sizes are reduced compared with other phones." Voice dialing worked with Bluetooth but not all the time.? Battery life was good.? The ticker was difficult to setup and showed old Facebook/Twitter updates. The Hummingbird processor is very good for graphics and games. Media Hub is called "among the best" Android music and video players. He likes the Droid Incredible and Droid X better from Verizon.

InfoSync rated the Samsung Continuum 85 out of 100. They found the shape peculiar - long and narrow. Because of the grip sensor the ticker was powered on by mistake. The external microSD slot enables users to swap out cards.? The screen froze sometimes. The call the ticker a "vortex sucking? into a tantalizing vacuum," while an excellent choice for stock brokers.? Voice quality is good. Battery life was mediocre. Photo quality was good like the Samsung Focus but not as good as iPhone. Video quality was above average and worked best in bright light. "Without the ticker panel, the Samsung Continuum is just as good as any other Galaxy S phone on the market, so let that be the deciding factor."

Black Friday to Cyber Monday, Success: Many Buy for Themselves, Says NPD

BlackFridayCyberMondaysales1.jpg

Early results from The NPD Group, Inc.'s "Anatomy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2010" are in, and the Black Friday weekend started off with a bang.

According to these early results, there were slightly more purchasers this year than last year.? The conversion rate (those shoppers that actually purchased) was up 4 percent over last year for this time period.? The highest conversion rate is held by those shoppers who reported shopping in a store with an almost 95 percent conversion rate.

"Conversion rates for Black Friday and super Saturday are always very high, but to see growth of 4 percent over the year before, tells us two big things," said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst, The NPD Group, Inc.? "One is that those people that went to shop bought, and two is that the retailers did a better job of luring consumers in with big deals and great savings."

The survey showed 33 percent of consumers bought items for themselves on Black Friday, which compares to 26 percent in a normal holiday period.

Update 11/28/10 1:57 PM PST: The conversion rates are still holding strong.? The number of survey respondents that report making a purchase during their shopping, whether in a store or online, is up almost 7 percent over last year.? (The conversion rate is the number of those shopping anywhere that report actually making a purchase.)

These results also show that consumers did engage in 'pre-searching' their purchases.? Almost 45 percent told NPD that they did online research before they went shopping.? Other media that respondents cited when asked about doing their homework were TV ads, catalogs and consumer reviews.

"This is my biggest sign of optimism in consumers this holiday, the increase in the number of respondents reporting they made 'impulse purchases,'" said Cohen, "This tells us that consumers are buying for themselves, again and sets the stage for growth this holiday."

Methodology: The Anatomy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2010 is an online survey of a nationally representative sample of 1768 US consumers ages 18+ assessing what they did on Black Friday (and to come Cyber Monday) and why. The results presented here represent preliminary data collected between Friday, November 26 and Saturday morning November, 27.

There are still super weekend and Cyber Monday deals happening now:

MetroPCS has deals on the BlackBerry 8530 with $80 off and reduced service to $50 a month.? They've also reduced prices with $100 off instantly on the Samsung Code (a Windows Mobile phone), $70 off the new Samsung Messenger III (only $49), and $50 off the Samsung Freeform II.

Amazon Wireless has some of the best deals on BlackBerry with one-cent BlackBerry smartphones and no activation fees with a contract.? We also found great web deals from Verizon, AT&T, U.S. Cellular, and Wirefly.

Black Friday through Cyber Monday shopping research suggests that you'll have better web buying experience than with mobile shopping.

For best incentive to switch to a smartphone, U.S. Cellular's $150 activation credit for smartphones is the most tempting.

Woman arrested after girl 'groomed on internet'

November 26, 2010

A?13-YEAR-OLD girl missing from her Cornwall home has been found in Surrey after apparently being lured there by a woman she met online.

Police arrested a 35-year-old woman in Horley on Tuesday (November 23) on suspicion of child sex and grooming offences, after the youngster's mother found internet messages relating to travel arrangements to and from Gatwick Airport.

Surrey Police said: "Officers attended an address in Horley at around 5am on Tuesday following a request from Devon and Cornwall Police, who were conducting a missing persons inquiry.

"Officers arrested a 35-year-old woman on suspicion of sexual assault on a minor and grooming a minor for sexual purposes. She has been released on conditional bail until January.

"We are liasing with Devon and Cornwall and the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Inquiries are continuing."

It is understood two tickets had been bought for a flight from Gatwick to Belfast.

Northern Ireland police added: "Following a request from Surrey Police, officers searched a house in Cookstown, Co Tyrone. A number of items were removed for further examination."

A council spokeswoman in Cornwall confirmed?the authorities?were helping the police inquiry.

The girl's horrified mother,?40, said: "We only found out where she had gone by hacking into her internet messages.

"It's every parent's nightmare.?A million things could have happened.

"She was even wearing her school uniform. She is a 13-year-old kid who looks her age.

"Forty years ago you had to hide behind a bush to grab a child. Now you can just sit in a chatroom. It shows nowhere is safe. It's absolutely nuts.

"Whatever happened, I'm glad my daughter is still alive. It could have been so much worse.

"But we have been left with a life sentence. We will never get over this and neither will my daughter."

The teenager is now back with her family in Cornwall.

VIDEO - Man jailed for Donal MacIntyre assault

THE man who attacked undercover TV reporter Donal MacIntyre in a bar in East Molesey has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

James Wild, 47, of Bridge Wharf, Chertsey, appeared at Guildford Crown Court for sentencing on Friday having been previously convicted of assault?occasioning actual bodily harm on Mr MacIntyre and his wife Ameera.

He?was given a two-year sentence for the assault on Mr MacIntyre and six months more?for assaulting his wife.

The?incident came as a result of a 1999 documentary made by the reporter on the Chelsea Headhunters firm, which led to a notorious football hooligan being jailed.

Sentencing Wild, Recorder Laurence West QC?said: "What happened in my view, having heard all of the evidence, is that following the original incident you were one of the figures involved in the further attack on Mr MacIntyre.

"You were involved in the?attack in the foyer of the club where Mrs MacIntyre put it that people who attacked her husband were on him like a pack of wolves.

"Wolves is giving them too much credit because wolves have courage."

Wild's?trial, which lasted?a week, heard the MacIntyres were at the Cloud 9 bar on June 17 last year when they were attacked.

Mrs MacIntyre?had been?due to go for a brain scan the next day.

An?altercation was sparked after they were approached by a man dressed head to toe in black, who began shouting at Mr MacIntyre.

The couple ran to the toilets but were surrounded by a gang as they attempted to leave. Mr MacIntyre was knocked over and hit by James Wild as he tried to get up.

He suffered?a black eye as a result of the attack, while his wife was left with bruises.

Gregory Fishwick, defending, said he was forced to go sift through a "binload" of references because of his client's good reputation.

"James Wild is a loving, giving, caring and hardworking man who does what he can for others, particularly with regards to his charity work," he said.

"His wife, his child, his fledging business would be affected if he is incarcerated."

The 25 days Wild spent on remand will count towards his sentence.

Speaking after the sentencing, Mr MacIntyre said?he was?very pleased that?"justice had been done."

But he added: "It is with great regret that only one of the 10 people who were involved in the assault were in the dock.

"I would invite Surrey Police and the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) to review this case and to review the support they give to witnesses.

"I am still grateful for the support?of my wife who had to go through what she and my family members shouldn't ever have to go through."

Sex attacker's 'diabetes' sentence appeal rejected

A SEX attacker who evaded capture for more than a decade?has failed in an appeal against his sentence for indecently assaulting seven young girls.

Anthony?De Boise, 63, a former officer for Wandworth Council, was jailed for 13 years at Southwark Crown Court in 2006?after admitting he had carried out the?attacks?in Surrey and south London.

On?Tuesday this week (November 23), De Boise, of Hurtbank Cottages, Holmbury St Mary, near Dorking, took his case to the Court of Appeal in a bid to have his punishment reduced, but it was thrown out by three senior judges.

The married planning officer attacked seven girls aged between 13 and 16 at Coulsdon, Riddlesdown and Esher between 1989 and 1996.

In one incident, two 13-year-old girls were left so traumatised by the abuse at Telegraph Hill, Hinchley Wood, that they scrambled through a barbed wire fence to escape.

Another was so sickened by?De Boise's?actions that she recalled wanting to vomit, while he wished another a "happy birthday" after attacking her shortly before she turned 15.

Despite a police manhunt, he remained at large for?10 years?after his final attack, but was caught out when he was arrested for an unrelated matter and a forensic linked was made.

De Boise?claimed his actions?were down to diabetic attacks, saying in police interviews that?he had felt depressed and unwell at the time and had not wanted to hurt the girls, although he?did say?he remembered what he had done.

At the Appeal Court, his legal team argued that fresh evidence from an expert in diabetes and the high blood sugar condition, hyperglycaemia, should result in his prison sentence being reduced.

The expert said there were elements to the case which suggested?De Boise had been suffering from "hyperglycaemic events" and so was not responsible, or not wholly responsible, for his actions.

The sex attacks had also stopped around the time that his condition improved, it was said.

But Mr Justice Mackay, sitting with Lord Justice Hughes and Mr Justice Cranston, said the expert had also noted features which made it less likely that?De Boise's?blood sugar might have been to blame.

Unlike most others who experience such attacks, he remembered a lot of his actions and there was no other evidence to suggest he had been hyperglycaemic at the times of the assaults, the top judge said.

He added: "We consider it must have been the case that the appellant was aware both of what he was doing and what he had done, even to an imperfect extent in its details.

"Had one of these offences happened as a single offence, followed by an immediate detection and prosecution, we could see a good argument for the proposition that his condition should be treated as significantly mitigating.

"For it to continue over a seven-year period is a very different picture.

"We feel driven to find that he knew what he had done and, it must therefore follow, of the risk that he might do it again if he took no steps to prevent it and sought no advice and help.

"He failed to take any action to prevent recurrence of these happenings. He kept his sexual feelings bottled up and hoped to defeat them on his own."

The judges upheld the 13-year sentence.

Pedestrian named as two more crashes investigated

THE?pedestrian killed when she was hit by a car as she crossed a road in Guildford has been named by police as 67-year-old local woman, Kathleen Roodhouse.

She had just posted some letters in Moorfield Road, on the Slyfield industrial estate, at about 5pm on Tuesday, and was crossing back to her car when she was struck by a red Peugeot 405.

Meanwhile, two men were taken to hospital on Thursday morning after a car that?failed to stop for police in Normandy came off the road and hit a tree, and a teenage girl was badly hurt in a hit-and-run crash near Guildford Cathedral on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said an inquest into Ms Roodhouse's death had been opened and adjourned.

She had parked her Vauxhall Omega in a lay-by in Moorfield Road and was heading back to it when the accident happened.

The Surrey Air Ambulance attended the scene. A spokesperson said Ms Roodhouse had suffered?head, facial and leg injuries and that she had a "traumatic cardiac arrest".

The Normandy incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission due to the involvement of a marked police vehicle.

A red Peugeot 106 failed to stop for the officers on the A322 just before 1am on Thursday, and then shortly afterwards it flipped over and crashed into a tree on the A323 Aldershot Road

The 19-year-old driver of the vehicle suffered serious head injuries and his 21-year-old passenger sustained serious neck injuries. They were both taken to the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.

The road was closed for a number of hours while investigators examined the scene but it was re-opened shortly after 6am.

Firefighter Joe Reynolds attended the crash, and he said: "One of the lads was sitting on the pavement when we got there, and the other was trapped in the car.

"It took us the best part of an hour to get him out. If the car had been on fire they would not have survived."

The hit-and-run incident happened at around 4.30pm on Wednesday at the junction of Ridgemount and Cathedral Close.

The 16-year-old local girl was struck by a car which did not stop and carried on travelling towards the railway station.

She suffered head and leg injuries and was taken to the Royal Surrey where her condition was described as stable.

The saloon-type vehicle involved was described as?being medium-sized and?grey-coloured,?and was?likely to have sustained damage to its windscreen.

Anyone with information about the Normandy incident should call the Surrey Police Collision Investigation Unit on 01483 639922, quoting reference?P10367703. For the Guildford hit-and-run crash,?use reference P10367210.

Council to monitor Freedom of Information requests

A NEW central record of requests made under the Freedom of Information Act?is to be introduced by Woking Borough Council, in order?to keep tabs on people who "abuse the system".

Following a?question from a concerned councillor at a meeting last month, the centralised recording of FOI?requests is to be introduced next year.

Council bosses hope the change will make responses more consistent and promote "pro-active dissemination".

Cllr Bryan Cross, Liberal Democrat?member?for Goldsworth East, raised the issue at a full council meeting on October 21 with a Freedom of Information-style question of his own.

In his five-part?submission to council officers, Cllr Cross asked for details on how much money had been spent by?the borough council?preparing answers to requests over the past two years, and how many had been received in total.

Cllr Cross tried unsuccessfully to find out the highest number of requests made by one individual, and also asked what proportion came from media organisations.

Cllr John Kingsbury, leader of the council, told Cllr Cross he was unable to divulge specifics as the information was not "centrally or separately monitored".

He said: “The council recognises that with the increase in use of FOI requests, particularly from a small number of individuals and companies, a more formal recording protocol may be required to ensure that requests are not missed and abuse of the system by malicious complainants is more easily identified.”

Now the matter is due to be discussed at a meeting of the executive committee on Thursday (November 25).

In the official notice of motion, Cllr Cross asked the council to update its policies so that each request must go before a director or head of the council’s legal service before it could be released.

He said: “This council recognises the importance of openness and transparency with its stakeholders.

“One way of achieving this is that all replies to FOI requests received by this council should in future be approved by the director or the head of legal services before they are released to the enquirer to ensure that replies given are comprehensive and complete.”

In a statement responding to Cllr Cross’s request, the council confirmed a central record of FOI requests would be kept from next April, which it hoped?would serve three main purposes.

The statement read: “First, it will identify areas of information that might benefit from pro-active dissemination.

“Second, it will help to ensure that FOI requests are properly and consistently dealt with.

“Third, it will make it easier to identify persons who abuse the system by submitting repeated requests for information.”

But the council confirmed it would retain?its current system for allocating responsibility?for requests, rather than referring all automatically to a senior level.

University fees protests at Surrey campuses

STUDENT protests have been held at universities in Surrey on Wednesday, coinciding with a day of demonstrations around the country over the proposed rise in tuition fees and cuts in education funding.

At University College London’s Royal Holloway site in Egham, more than 70 students have been occupying a corridor of the Picture Gallery in the Founder’s Building.

A rally was held outside Kingston University during which a few people broke away from the main group and marched into town, where they sat down on the roundabout by Kingston College and held up traffic until they were moved on by the police.

And at the University of Surrey in Guildford, members of the Surrey United Anti-Capitalists group (SUAC) held a lunchtime protest outside the Starbucks branch on campus.

Royal Holloway said it was working with the students’ union and staff members to ensure the safety of those taking part in the sit-in, which began at 5pm on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the college said: “It is a peaceful protest and we respect their right to stage this action.

“The principal has met with the students and they told us they planned to remain sat in the hallway to coincide with the national day of action.”

The protest was planned by the Royal Holloway Anti Cuts Alliance, and organiser Daniel Cooper, 21, is also a member of the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts.

He said: “This is an ideological assault on higher education funding and we need to fight back.

“There is a great atmosphere, everyone is buzzing. It’s unprecedented at Royal Holloway but everyone wants to be involved and make a difference.

“We are against a rise in tuition fees and cuts across the public sector.”

"Must be fought"

At Kingston University meanwhile, Chris Dingle, vice-president for education with the students’ union, said: “Overall we had the best part of 500 or 600 people here. It was mainly peaceful.

“We did have a couple of incidents of bad behaviour but they were dealt with by security staff and the police.

“There was one attempt by a few students to storm the main building but security did not let them in. As a union we do not support anyone who breaks the law.

“I think the primary aim was to raise awareness. Anyone who came down Penrhyn Road today could not have failed to notice it.

“There were a lot of school kids who had walked out of school and joined up with us,” Mr Dingle added.

SUAC students at the University of Surrey also joined in the action, congregating outside Starbucks to voice their anger over the Browne Review proposals, which would see annual university tuition fees rising from £3,250 to as much as £9,000.

The group, which claims to be made up of socialists, communists, anarchists, environmentalists, peace campaigners and humanists, said they were also trying to raise awareness about cuts to public services generally in Guildford.

A spokesman said: “With arts and humanities subjects looking set to become viable only for the rich, the Browne Review is an attack on the access of working class people to culture, that must be fought with every means at our disposal.”

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg had called for Wednesday’s country-wide demonstrations to be called off, saying to the tuition fees protesters: “Examine our proposals before taking to the streets. Listen and look before you march and shout.”

But his plea fell on deaf ears, as thousands of students descended on London again and a police van in Whitehall was vandalised.

In other areas there was a party atmosphere, with protesters jumping up and down to dance music, while anti-government slogans were chanted by a mass of people in Trafalgar Square.

The protest has been dubbed Day X, with parents, teachers and trade unionists invited to join the students.

Parliament is due to vote on the proposed fees increase before Christmas.

Samsung Galaxy S News: Samsung Sold 600,000 Galaxy Tab Tablets

SamsungGalaxyTabsnip.JPG

Samsung has sold over 600,000 Samsung Galaxy Tab tablets since it went on sale last month, according to a report in the Korea Herald.

Samsung reported that consumer demand for its Galaxy Tab has been robust and is outpacing supply in most countries.

Samsung previously reported, on November 10, that three million of the seven million Samsung Galaxy S phones it has shipped worldwide have gone to the United Sates since July.

"We believe tablet PCs will take over a bigger portion of the market next year," Samsung's mobile division head Shin Jong-kyun said at the IFA gadget expo in Berlin in September.? "For this year, we're projecting to sell up to 1 million units."

Bloggers contend that the numbers are impressive and show that there is a huge demand for super-portable computers that have the battery life and connectivity of a cell phone.? Reviews of the Samsung Galaxy Tab have been good, calling it an "iPad rival."? However, the mega-marketing and uber-popularity of the iPad is a tough nut to beat.

Powered by the Android 2.2 platform, the Samsung Galaxy Tab has a 7-inch enhanced TFT touchscreen, 1GHz Hummingbird processor, support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1, 3G connectivity, 802.11n, Wi-Fi, 3-megapixel camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera, GPS and Bluetooth 3.0.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is part of the Galaxy S phone series that is currently available as the Samsung Captivate (read review) at AT&T, the Samsung Epic 4G (read review) at Sprint, the Samsung Vibrant (read review) at T-Mobile, and Samsung Fascinate (read review) at Verizon.? The Samsung Galaxy S phone has various features.? You can see the differences in our Samsung Galaxy S comparison article.

We are still waiting for reviews of the new Samsung Continuum from Verizon.?

Although the Galaxy Tab ships with Android 2.2 (Froyo), U.S. Samsung Galaxy S phone owners are still waiting for an update.

Brazen theft of van carrying Christmas lights

THIEVES who stole a van while its owner was putting up Cranleigh’s Christmas lights have been labelled as "absolutely bloody evil".

Chamber of trade president, Roger Coupe, blasted those responsible for taking Paul Fishlock’s vehicle?last Wednesday (November 17).

The thieves stole the black Vauxhall Mizano van at around 4.45pm from the side of the David Manns store in the High Street.

At the time Mr Fishlock was putting up the store’s lights with a colleague, and the vehicle had been left unlocked because they were returning to it every few minutes.

After installing the first set of lights at the shop, he went inside to explain that he could not put up a second?lot as the suppliers had sent the wrong ones.

“I was in there for five minutes and when I came out the van had gone. I couldn’t believe it,”?Mr Fishlock?said.

The van contained a large quantity of tools, valued at around £3,500, and some of the lights which had not yet been put up.

Police said witnesses had described seeing a small grey people carrier pulling up behind the van.

A man got out of the car and put on working boots, a high visibility jacket and a hard hat before getting into the?vehicle and driving off towards Guildford.

It was later found abandoned in the car park of the Volunteer Inn in Abinger Hammer.

Some of the tools were missing, along with competition motorbike clothing and equipment?- Mr Fishlock is a two-times European champion trials rider - bearing the name Paul's Building Services and those of his sponsors, Howden’s Joinery and Surrey Cycles.

The decorations had been left untouched, though?Mr Fishlock?was not able?get hold of?them until this week.

As a result, new lights had to be quickly obtained so there were no dark spots in the High Street for the switch-on ceremony by TV presenter Anthea Turner on Saturday (November 20).

Detective Constable Matt Evans said: “This unfortunate incident just goes to show that it only takes a matter of minutes for thieves to strike.

“Luckily the van and the lights have been recovered, but the victim is still out of pocket thanks to the theft of his tools. We are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward straightaway.”

Anyone who can help should contact DC Evans at Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference WV/10/6575. Alternatively, calls can be made anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
