Gun fired at ceiling in shop armed robbery

AN armed robber fired his gun into the ceiling of a convenience store in Redhill on Monday night before escaping with around £300?cash.

The man walked into the BMP supermarket, in Brighton Road, Salfords, at around 8.20pm and demanded money from the shopkeeper.

Police said he placed a black holdall on the counter and ordered the employee to fill it up.

When the worker asked if this was a joke, the man shot towards the ceiling and damaged the roof and a cigarette machine. The member of staff was not injured.

The suspect was described as?being about?6ft 2in tall and of slim build.

He was wearing a three-quarter length black coat, a grey?top with the hood over his head, a black balaclava and dark trousers.?

It is believed?he ran?along an alleyway into Park View Road and escaped in a waiting car.

Detective Sergeant Karl Humphrey said: “It is extremely rare for a firearm to be discharged like this and I would like to reassure the community we are doing all we can to identify this man.

"The employee remained calm throughout the incident and was not injured.

"I know the Salfords community will be quite shaken by this incident which is why I am sure members of the public will want to help us catch this man.

"Did you see a man loitering around the convenience store before the armed robbery? Perhaps you live in Park View Road and saw a man matching the suspect’s description at around the time of the robbery getting into a car and didn’t think anything was suspicious at the time??

“I would encourage anyone who has any information relating to the incident to call me immediately or Crimestoppers if you wish to remain anonymous."

A member of staff at the store, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "We have never seen anything like this before.

"The man came in and demanded money and when my colleague asked if he was joking he just fired into the roof of the shop."
