A DIABETES sufferer who was found dead 11 days after going missing from his home in Byfleet took his own life by hanging himself, an inquest has ruled.
Michael Hayward, 43, disappeared on June 8 and it was more than a week before his body was discovered?in a secluded area of woodland near Ockham Common.
Police and volunteers carried out a massive search before he was?found?lying in a bush of rhododendrons.
Speaking at Woking Coroners’ Court on Tuesday, coroner Michael Burgess said: “Although it is unclear precisely when he may have died, we do know he died as a result of hanging.”
According to the inquest, Mr Hayward was said to be depressed because of a relationship breakdown.
Mr Burgess added: “I conclude that he did take his life while suffering from depression.
“I extend to his family my condolences.”
Mr Hayward lived in?Edward II Avenue, Byfleet.
Giving evidence, his partner of 11 years, Sara Bridgwood, told the inquest that he needed constant reminding to properly treat his diabetes, which often led to arguments between them.
She said: “He never really took care of his diabetes but his health had really deteriorated in the last two or three years.
“I told him he couldn’t carry on that way and I began to get anxious about it.
“I was always telling him to take better care of himself.”
When questioned by the coroner as to why it took police 11 days to find Mr Hayward’s body, Sergeant Chris Rambour, who was involved with the search, said: “I believe parts of the area had been searched but the bushes had not been.
“Officers had been to certain landmarks like the mausoleum, which is nearby, and those areas were searched.”
