Staines name change idea 'needs to be explained'

ANY decision on a possible name change for Staines is not likely to be made any time soon, the leader of Spelthorne Borough Council has said.

Councillor John Packman denied suggestions that "all hell had broken loose" in the authority's Knowle Green offices in Staines, after council and business leaders revealed they were considering adding either 'on Thames' or 'upon-Thames' to the town's ancient name.

With rumours of unscheduled council meetings being hastily held as well, Cllr Packman said: "People are exaggerating. The matter is now with the council and under review. We need to take a step back and consider the matter.”

The name change idea is aimed at improving?the town's image in order?to capitalise on future opportunities ahead of the 2012?London Olympics, and also to rid Staines of its association with comedy character Ali G.

Cllr?Packman said a council cabinet meeting was due to be held on November?23 but that a full?agenda had yet to be drawn up.

He admitted that he felt the thinking behind the proposal,?which originated from members of the Spelthorne Business Forum, had not yet been given the considetation?it deserved.

“There could be benefits to be gained," Cllr Packman said.

"The rationale behind the thinking of the business forum needs to be explained in more detail to the good people of Spelthorne.

"I don't think they have been given that [opportunity] at the moment."
