RHS Wisley 'conkerthon' smashes world record

November 23, 2010

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) garden at Wisley?has entered the record books?after staging?a mass ‘conkerthon’.

It?notched a place in the Guinness World Records for? Most Simultaneous Matches of Conkers played at one time.

More than 500 visitors of all ages joined in the mass conker event at RHS Wisley on Saturday, October 30.

People travelled from all over the south of England to take part.

In total, 251 matches were played, which helped set the new world record.

RHS chief horticultural adviser, Guy Barter, said: "This is a fantastic achievement.

"Well done to all of the ‘conkerers’ who helped to set this new record.

"It clearly shows the great affection with which the common horse chestnut is held."

The world record was previously held by Bristol’s Redland High School where 197 conker matches were played at the same time on October 13, 2006.

The RHS held the mass conker match to help highlight the plight of the horse chestnut tree, which is under threat through the spread of the chestnut leaf mining moth and chestnut bleeding canker.
